Back of postcard (verso). Image of a page with text. Full text includes "No. 42 Mob Burns a Madrid Cathedral After two years of tyranny another Leftist Government was swept into power in Spain in 1936. Although it proceeded to jail thousands of Rightists on suspicion, it did not prosecute leaders of its own mobs who burned churches, monasteries and convents; lynched priests and civilians. In March, 1936, a wild rumor was circulated in Madrid to the effect that nuns had given poisoned candy to Leftist children. Class hatreds fanned the flames. Fire brands were wielded. The mad mob marched on the beautiful Church of San Luis, situated in the center of Madrid, applied their torches to its scared walls. When they had completed their dastardly work the magnificent building was gutted by fire and several priests had been taken out and lynched. Before the War broke out in July of the same year, 170 churches had been utterly destroyed; 251 partly destroyed; hundreds of innocent people killed. To know the horrors of war is to want peace This is one of a series of 240 Picture Cards. Save to get them all. Picture and Text Copyright 1938, GUM, INC., Phila., Pa."
