Back of postcard (verso). Image of page with text. Full text includes "108 Gibraltar Gives Refuge to Spaniards During the summer of 1936 a camp for Spanish refugees from La Linea, on the isthmus just north of the Rock, was set up in Gibraltar. British and Spanish refugees poured into Gilbraltar, many sleeping in parks and open spaces for lack of accommodations! A local shipping firm placed a large shed on the waterfront at the disposal of women and children. By July 21, 1936, there were some 5000 refugees there, many of them encamped in large tents on the North Side, and others living in garages or in cars parked in the roads. The overcrowding was increased by the arrival of hundreds of British subjects rescued from coast towns of Spain. Finally, when the fortress could take no more, a strongly reinforced guard was placed at the British Frontier and additional barbed wire fences were erected. The picture shows crowds pressing against the railings in the hope of being admitted to a place of safety within. To know the horrors of war is to want peace.
