Spanish Civil War Postcard 027

Front of postcard (recto). Image of a group of cartoon soldiers in blue uniforms pointing rifles at another group of soldiers in yellow uniforms with their arms raised. The soldiers in blue uniforms burn paintings, books, and a cross. The soldiers in yellow stand at the top of a small staircase leading to a building entrance. There is smoke in the air.
Back of postcard (verso). Image of a page with text. Full text includes "133 Loyalists Take Rebels Prisoners in Barcelona The rebellion which broke out in July 1936 and plunged Spain into a civil war soon spread through the country. But not all of the provincial insurrections were successful, notably those in Madrid and in Barcelona. The civilian population, quickly armed by the Government, came to the support of the Loyalist troops, and many Rebel soldiers were captured and killed in the hand-to-hand street fighting that followed. The picture shows a corps of Rebel snipers in the act of surrendering to Loyalist supporters after the church which had been used as a sniping base was set on fire. In the foreground are seen articles from the looted church being burned to help in smoking out the snipers. Almost all Barcelona's churches except the Cathredal were either partially damaged or razed to the ground by Loyalist torches. To know the horrors of war is to want peace.
