Spanish Civil War Postcard 058

Item

Front of postcard (recto). Image of a group of cartoon soldiers storming a smokey or foggy field. The soldiers emerge from a trench. In the trench, there are two soldiers with boxes. In the background, there are canons and airplanes behind the trench. Past the fog, there are mountains and two small explosions.
Back of postcard (verso). Image of a page with text. Full text includes "214 "Over the Top" with Hand Grenades While Rebel warships off the Mediterranean shore were shattering Loyalist coastal defenses, on April 28, 1938, the Twenty-second Loyalist Brigade, armed only with hand grenades, was meeting its doom in a frenzied battle north of Castellon de la Plana. Low-hanging clouds over the battlefield prevented action by Loyalist field artillery and kept their planes grounded. Thousands of cases of hand grenades were brought up to the Loyalists' front-line trenches in relays and the Government supporters, thus armed, went "over the top." They were met by such an intense fire from the Rebel lines that most of the Twenty-second Brigade were killed, wounded or captured. The picture shows the Loyalists advancing, at a signal, out of the protection of their trenches into the perils of "No Man's Land." Note the rapidly emptying hand grenade cases in the foreground.
